The Rise and Rise of Diabetes in Ireland - Is it something that should worry us all?

The first RCSI MyHealth lectures took place on 3rd March 2016 and this three-part public talk was entitled "The Rise and Rise of Diabetes in Ireland". This session is introduced by Rise and Rise of Diabetes in Ireland (part 1) RCSI Senior Lecturer, Dr Garry Duffy.

Professor Paul Johnson, Paediatric Surgeon, from the University of Oxford, then gives the first part of this lecture where he discusses ‘Type 1 Diabetes – ‘One Step Closer to a Cure’ where he talks about the innovative Islet transplantation procedure.

       

Dr Aisling O’Leary, Lecturer in Pharmacy Practice, at RCSI delivered the second part of this lecture called ‘Diabetes Medications – Current Treatments and What the Future Holds’, where she talks about how diabetes (both types) are treated, how they will be treated in the future, and the best treatment - which is prevention. In the final part of the lecture, Dr Diarmuid Smith, Consultant Endocrinologist from Beaumont Hospital explores ‘Type 2 Diabetes - Prevention and Treatment’.
